Matt's AI Policy

Lots of websites have AI policies these days so I figured I would join in on the latest trend.

I am strongly opposed to AI in all forms - it steals from humans, it has often been trained with human bias (see white supremacy within Big Tech), it gets things wrong and lies consistently, it is incredibly damaging to the environment, it is causing the proliferation of data centres which are bad news for the local communities where they are based - these use up a lot of power and water and are not sustainable despite the "powered by renewables" greenwashing that the Big Tech industry is pushing.

AI helps to drive inequality; it is mainly used by people in the Global North (eg to make them more productive), whilst those in the Global Majority bear the true cost - so, the same old story.

But Matt - What about AEO / GEO / AIO?

As I said - I am very anti-AI. But if a client of mine approached me, and asked for an AI audit, or to ensure they are visible across AI engines etc... I will probably comply.

This is because many people are starting to use it - and if I am working with a charity, who wants to ensure they can be found/seen by these AI platforms, then I find it hard to turn down this request (I exist in a capitalist society; therefore I have to sometimes play the game, if I want to eat / feed my family / continue to repay my mortgage) :)

I personally don't believe that because people are using it, this is a really effective use of my time/expertise. I think there is always more important and beneficial work we can be doing instead of worrying about AI visibility.

My long term hope is that the AI bubble bursts and sanity prevails - humans begin to critically analyse if we really need AI (answer: no) and so it dies out.

Gerry McGovern wrote a great book that covers this in nice depth, plus technology in general. The book is called 99th Day: A Warning About Technology.
